The Lincoln Highway project is going well. I'm meeting some people I'd never expect to meet, and getting some great shots. Check out the latest.

I'm close to 30 rolls deep in this project and looking forward to more shooting. More to come, comments always welcomed.

Site Re-haul & Other News

I'm considering a bit of a re-haul on the page... hopefully fix some of the bugs and annoyances (there are quite a few.) and maybe take some work off this damn thing. I don't think I've reached the point in my career where I need such a comprehensive archive of my work online. So expect a few changes whenever I can get a free moment to get myself back into web design mode.

As far other news goes, I'm keeping busy shooting a new documentary project on Lincoln Highway otherwise known as Route 30, America's first coast to coast highway. It's the road I live off of and a road I've traveled all to often. I'm shooting everything I can: the people, the lifestyle, the architecture, the land, and everything in between. The project is off to a strong start, I'm really happy with the first rolls of film I've gotten back. The final product will be a book, most likely self-published through a site like blurb or lulu. Ideally this book will set itself apart from all the other touristy books about Lincoln Highway. I'm not going for landmarks, I want what's real and relevant. Anyway, here's a taste of the project so far. (click the images for a slightly bigger version.)

more to come soon, I don't want to give too much away :) feedback welcomed as always.

Open now at Moraine Valley Community College:

Tyler Hewitt and Dan Jarvis
Double Exposure

Hewitt is Associate Professor, Studio Art: Photography and Design at MVCC. Jarvis was a student at MVCC and is now at Columbia College Chicago.

The exhibition comes in two parts. First is a series of photographic images that were created in partnership. Hewitt shot a roll of color film, and then gave the film to Jarvis who re-loaded it into his camera before taking his own selection of shots. The result is a curious series of “double exposures”.

The exhibition also features work made independently by the two photographers. Hewitt’s series of cyanotypes and Jarvis’s photographs both examine the myths and realities of the suburban experience in their own way. The work questions the optimistic portrayal of an unsustainable, ever-expanding suburban landscape and critiques over-commercialization and the uncomfortable reality that has developed in its wake.

Opens: Monday, August 16, 2010
Runs until: Thursday, September 16, 2010

Upcoming Exhibitions

Tyler Hewitt & Dan Jarvis Exhibition Opening
Friday, May 28, 2010 6:30pm - 8pm
McCord Gallery, 9602 West Creek Road (130th St. at La Grange Ave), Palos Park, IL

The work of Tyler Hewitt and Daniel R. Jarvis examines the myths and realities
of the suburban experience.

Dan Jarvis’ photographs explore a contemporary suburbia in which the imagined
optimism of previous decades has been replaced by a reality of inertia and
isolation. Utilizing multiple images arranged in a sea of white paper, the work
explores the unrestrained, expansive nature of the suburban landscape
contrasted with the claustrophobia and trapped feeling often felt by its residents.
These photographs of interior and exterior spaces critique over
commercialization and the growth of an unsustainable suburban ideal that
appears optimistic on the surface while it consumes both the landscape and
personal identity.

Tyler Hewitt works in alternative process photographic printing and screen-
printing. His photographs and collages utilize 1950’s and 1960’s era mass media
ephemera, primarily homemaker’s magazines, home design and decorating
magazines, and craft and hobby books. This source material is appropriated,
reassembled and recontextualized, uncovering the socializing nature of this
material and its reinforcement of traditional gender roles. Simultaneously, his
work questions the overly optimistic portrayal of the expanding suburban
landscape and lifestyle found in these books and magazines.

Together, the work of Tyler Hewitt and Dan Jarvis illustrates an unrealized
dream soured by time and reality. This is not a dystopian vision. Rather, it is a
snapshot of an unrealistic and unachievable ideal, and of the uncomfortable
reality that has developed in its wake.

The exhibit runs May 25-June 20. The exhibit and opening reception are free and open to the public.

Also stay tuned for a group show at Blue Star Wine Bar in Noble Square (1209 N. Noble Street
Chicago, IL 60642) featuring photographs from a recent road trip south to Memphis with Ashley Kamin  & Rick Majewski. More on this later, but you can sure there will be plenty of wine and cheese.
